Weather/Wind planning...
Average wind, Chesapeake Bay/Miami/Rhode Isl/Virgin Isl. NOTE: These are averages, on the Chesapeake (and most coastal areas) there is a sea breeze (Ches-normally from about 12-4PM) where the winds may be well into the teens, but the quiet periods of morning and late evening bring the averages down and account for some areas reputation for light air. Also note the small difference between summer and June or Sept. which are considered prime sailing times--Plan your sailing for afternoons, and motoring or quiet anchorages at other times. The Chesapeake Bay is a gentle
body of water surrounded by lovely creeks and coves
populated by friendly water oriented residents. We
welcome you to the bay!
Most Coastline? Where in the U.S. do you want to cruise?
But, Chesapeake is the most cruiser friendly, interesting with lots of places to visit. Active or pastoral. A private anchorage or a party--it's all here.
The Chesapeake is one of the largest estuaries in the
world; which means great sailing for you. The Chesapeake
Bay was formed from glaciers millions of years ago during
the ice age. As the glaciers retreated the Susquehanna
River filled in the gigantic crevice formed. As a result
our waters are brackish varying from very salty near
the mouth of the Bay to the south and almost fresh at
the northern end.
Cruising
is generally easy and forgiving in terms of water conditions
and wind. If you are worried about touching the bottom,
that is easy too as it is mostly mud. There is virtually
no fog and navigation is easily accomplished with line
of sight. The tide range is only about 1.5 feet and
the maximum tidal current in the middle of the bay averages
less than _ knot. There are over 5,000 miles
of navigable shoreline available to explore.
(It has been said that a person can cruise all his life
and never cruise the same place twice.) Summer winds
are somewhat light averaging 8-12 knots. Spring and
fall sailing is typically brisker and with the warm
temperatures of the mid Atlantic region, our charter
season is popular mid-April through the end of October.
