NOTE: These are averages, on the Chesapeake (and most coastal areas) there is a sea breeze (Ches-normally from about 12-4PM) where the winds may be well into the teens, but the quiet periods of morning and late evening bring the averages down and account for some areas reputation for light air. Also note the small difference between summer and June or Sept. which are considered prime sailing times--Plan your sailing for afternoons, and motoring or quiet anchorages at other times.
